David Russell (guitarist)

David Russell (* 1953 in Glasgow ) is a Scottish - Spanish classical guitarist .

Russell was born in Glasgow to a couple of painters, but grew up in Es Migjorn Gran on Menorca from the age of seven . He studied with Hector Quine at the Royal Academy of Music in London and won numerous international guitar competitions, including the 1977 Francisco Tárrega Competition and twice the Julian Bream Guitar Prize .

Russell has recorded more than 20 albums to date and won the 2005 Grammy for Aire Latino in the "Best Solo Instrument Performance Without Orchestra" category. In his recordings Russell covers a wide range of classical guitar music from the Renaissance to contemporary compositions.

In addition to the recordings, Russell also has numerous editions and adaptations of works by, among others, Johann Sebastian Bach , Domenico Scarlatti , Enrique Granados and Isaac Albéniz . Russell has been a Fellow since 1997 and a Visiting Professor at the Royal Academy of Music since autumn 2010 .
