David Saltiel
David Saltiel ( Greek Δαυίδ Σαλτιέλ ; born 1931 in Thessaloniki ) is Chazzan of the Jewish community of Thessaloniki . He is a representative of traditional Sephardic chant.
Saltiel, who did not leave his hometown even during the Nazi era, is considered to be the last representative of an unadulterated Sephardic style of singing, as cultivated in the Jewish community of Thessaloniki before the Second World War.
Saltiel has been recording songs in Ladino since the 1950s . In 1997 the album Jewish-Spanish Songs from Thessaloniki was created , on which he is accompanied by Markos Skoulios ( oud ), Jorgos Mavrommatis ( Kanun ), Jorgos Psaltis (violin), Leftheris Pavlou ( frame drum ) and Nikos Tzannis-Ginnerup ( lyre ).
