David Sztybel (born February 2, 1967 in Ontario ) is a Canadian animal ethicist and philosopher.

He studied at the University of Toronto between 1986 and 2000 and graduated with a doctorate . The topic of his doctoral thesis was empathy and reason in ethics . His main areas of study are meta and environmental ethics , including in particular the theory and practice of the animal liberation movement . During his student days he was President of the Philosophers for Peace (1994–95). 2001–2002 he was a fellow at Queens University in Kingston (Ontario) . Since 2008 he has been a permanent member of the Oxford Center on Animal Ethics .

Based on writings critical of animal rights, Sztybel argues that classic animal rights literature leaves key questions unanswered. The withdrawal of animal ethicists on the concept of speciesism and its criticism (s) is not very helpful insofar as its existence is rejected by practically all critics. It shows how criteria can be formulated from an anthropocentric perspective that justify inequality along species membership, but do not argue with species membership. Sztybel problematizes the exclusion of people from the "moral sphere" associated with this argument .

Sztybel is a sharp critic of abolitionism and advocates an animal welfare approach for practical political work.
