Political career

For the first time, Thompson ran in the 2003 general election to national elections. He ran in the constituency of Ross, Skye and Inverness West , but could not prevail against the Liberal Democrat John Farquhar Munro . In the parliamentary elections in 2007 he was again unable to win the direct mandate of Ross, Skye and Inverness West, but moved as one of seven candidates on the regional electoral list for the electoral region Highlands and Islands in the Scottish Parliament as a result of the election result . As part of the 2011 constituency reform, the constituency of Ross, Skye and Inverness West was dissolved and largely incorporated into the new constituency of Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch , for which Thompson ran in the 2011 general election. He won the direct mandate of the newly created constituency. To the elections in 2016 Thompson has not raced for more. His party colleague Kate Forbes held the mandate for the SNP.
