It was introduced in 1999 as one of eight constituencies in the Highlands and Islands electoral region , which was redesigned as part of the constituency revision in 2011. It comprised sparsely populated, central areas of the Council Area Highland consisting of areas of the traditional counties Inverness-shire and Ross-shire with the cities of Dingwall , Alness and Muir of Ord as well as the Isle of Skye . Inverness itself, however, was assigned to the neighboring constituency of Inverness East, Nairn and Lochaber . In the 2001 census survey, a total of 71,966 people lived within its borders. The areas have merged into the constituencies of Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch , Caithness, Sutherland and Ross and Inverness and Nairn . A deputy was sent.
