David Kenneth Roy Thomson, 3rd Baron Thomson of Fleet (born June 12, 1957 ) is a Canadian businessman. With a fortune of 19 billion US dollars , he ranks 20th on the Forbes list of the richest people in the world . He is the son of the late Kenneth Thomson, 2nd Baron Thomson of Fleet , and succeeded him in 2002 as chairman of the Thomson Corporation . He lives in Toronto .

Thomson attended Upper Canada College in Toronto, after which he studied at Selwyn College in Cambridge until 1978 .

Business life

Thomson has worked for several companies owned or controlled by his family. He was the manager of a branch of The Bay , a fashion chain, and President of Zellers, the second largest Canadian wholesale chain. He founded the real estate company Osmington Incorporated , which is not part of the Thomson family.

When his father Kenneth died in June 2006, David took over the management of the Thomson Corporation. This was already established in 1975 by David's grandfather, the company's founder Roy Thomson, in his autobiography. With the death of his father, he also inherited the British title of Baron Thomson of Fleet , which had been bestowed on his grandfather, a newspaper baron on Fleet Street , in 1964.

Private

Thomson has been married twice and has three children, two daughters from their first marriage and a son who is the designated heir to the family property.

Like his father previously, David Thomson is a financier of the Art Gallery of Ontario and has a valuable collection of John Constable's paintings . He lives very secluded and hardly gives interviews to the press. He was engaged to actress Kelly Rowan , with whom he has a child.
