David Tobias Knoll

David Tobias Knoll (* 1736 in Namslau ; † 1818 in Breslau ) was a German merchant and composer .

Life

Knoll was the son of a miller and received early music lessons from the organist in his hometown. Due to the early death of his father in 1850, he was forced to go to Breslau and earn a living as a merchant. There he soon took over the organ playing from Gottlieb Benjamin Holland at Polish church services in the Christophorikirche . From 1766 Knoll had composition lessons with Johann Georg Hofmann, the organist of the main church Maria Magdalena .

Works

Knoll left behind several church music pieces that were very popular in Breslau at the time, but none of which was printed. He has also written several musicological treatises.
