David Unreich

David Unreich (Dufi Unreich, Ben Shalom, born July 15, 1907 in Bratislava , † 1957 ) was a Slovak , Jewish wrestler .

Life

David Unreich came from an Orthodox Jewish family in Pressburg (from 1919 Bratislava ). His father Jonas Unreich was a businessman. His mother Regina Unreichová, b. Grünhut, ran a dining room. She was a relative of Aron Grünhut , who saved the lives of hundreds of Jews in the city. David's six brothers emigrated to Palestine at an early age. David himself stayed with his parents in Bratislava.

In 1938, together with Imrich Lichtenfeld , the founder of the Krav Maga martial art , he organized a militia to defend against anti-Semitic attacks in the Jewish quarter of Bratislava . 1939, after the establishment of the Slovak Republic, in which the sole governing Hlinka party as an ally of the Axis powers a dictatorial exercised power, David Unreich returned from a stay in the US not go back.

His parents as well as his sister Terézia Weissfischová and their children Judita and Miriam were deported and murdered in one of the last transports to Auschwitz in 1944 . In 2017, an exhibition in honor of David Unreich took place at the Museum of Jewish Culture in Bratislava.

Career as an athlete

Like his six brothers, he was a member of the ŠK Makkabea Bratislava sports club . With a height of 188 cm and a weight of 120 kg he fought in the heavyweight division. In 1929 he won the district championship in the Greco-Roman style in Bratislava. He was a seven-time amateur champion of Czechoslovakia. In 1935 he won the title of Jewish world champion at the Maccabiade in Palestine . In 1937 he became a professional under the name Ben Shalom and won the European Championship in Riga . From 1938 to 1940 he competed in over 100 undefeated fights in the USA.
