David from the block

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

David von dem Block (* around 1590 ; † 1640 or 1641 in Danzig , Polish-Prussia ) was a painter of Flemish origin in Danzig.

Life

The father Willem van den Blocke was a Flemish sculptor who immigrated to Königsberg and Danzig. Brother Abraham also became a sculptor, Izaak a painter. The earliest mention of David van den Blocke is from 1609 when he needed a real birth certificate to move to Neustadt Brandenburg (or Neubrandenburg?).

In 1619 he applied for admission to the painters' guild of Danzig and in 1620 became a citizen of the city. Since then he has painted in Gdansk and the surrounding area. In 1728 David became city watchman, which he apparently remained until the end of his life.

From December 7, 1640, a last mention is received in the city files; on September 30, 1741 he died. David of the block left a widow Judith and three daughters.
