Others

After taking office as Minister of Defense, Tonojan caused a sensation with populist and contradicting remarks regarding the conflict resolution process of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict . In a meeting with the Armenian community in New York at the end of March 2019, just a few hours after the first official meeting between Nikol Pashinyan and the Azerbaijani head of state Ilham Aliyev , he emphasized that the formula “land for peace” was replaced by the formula “new war for new ones Areas ”reformulated. Accordingly, in the event of a renewed outbreak of war with Azerbaijan , the Armenian side intends to take offensive action and to capture new Azerbaijani territories except the Nagorno-Karabakh region, which is recognized under international law as Azerbaijani territory and was occupied by Armenia in the early 1990s. A week after these statements, Tonoyan tried to calm things down and insisted that Azerbaijan must prepare its army for peace. But a few days later he said in an interview that Armenian stormtroopers were ready to wreak havoc behind the Azerbaijani front in the event of a provocation.
