deSingel
The international art center deSingel in Antwerp is an art center of the Flemish-speaking community in Belgium with an extensive, varied program.
history
The idea for this center, in which music should be combined with theater and the visual arts, came from Peter Benoit . The art center planned by the architect Léon Stynen (1899–1990) was opened on November 4, 1980 in the presence of the Belgian royal couple Baudouin I and Fabiola .
offer
The culture and art center deSingel is an open house for contemporary art and houses four disciplines: architecture, dance, music and theater under one roof. The emphasis is on contemporary representations, both of unconventional productions and interpretations of classical works. DeSingel is the home of artists such as Jan Fabre with Troubleyn , Philippe Herreweghe and the Collegium Vocale Gent as well as the Beethoven Academie under the direction of Hervé Niquet . DeFilharmonie also gives concerts there regularly.
The deSingel is home to the Conservatorium van Antwerpen , the Posthoogeschool voor Podiumkunsten, the Vlaams Architectuurinstituut and Radio 2 Antwerp.
Furnishing
The deSingel has three stages: The Blue Hall is a concert hall with 1,000 seats, the Red Hall with 800 seats is used for dance and theater performances, the Small Hall is equipped with 92 seats. The walkways and the connecting rooms are so wide that they can also be used as exhibition rooms.
Extension buildings
In 2011, the original buildings were expanded with plans from 2007 by Belgian architect Stéphane Beel . A theater workshop, practice rooms for musicians, a dance studio as well as another hall with 300 seats and a special exhibition area of 400 square meters have been created. Some of the new buildings were inserted between the existing buildings, others, especially those of the Conservatory, found space in a two-storey, elevated rectangular part of the building, which hovers as a roof over the buildings and open spaces below.
