Hervé Niquet (born October 28, 1957 in Abbeville ) is a French conductor and harpsichordist .

Life

In addition to harpsichord and organ, Hervé Niquet studied composition, choral conducting and acting. Early on he turned to choir and orchestra conducting. In 1980 he was appointed choirmaster at the Paris Opera . In the meantime he sang as a tenor in the ensemble "Les Arts Florissants" under William Christie .

In 1987 he founded the ensemble “Le Concert Spirituel”, named after the institution of the same name that shaped Parisian musical life in the 18th century. While Niquet initially devoted himself to the rediscovery of the French "Grands motets", he later tried more and more, partly forgotten works by French composers such as André Campra , Jean Gilles , Joseph Bodin de Boismortier , Marc-Antoine Charpentier , Joseph Michel , François d'Agincour or Paolo Lorenzani , to be performed and recorded in the sense of historical performance practice .

In 2002 Niquet founded the Montréal- based baroque orchestra "La Nouvelle Sinfonie", in 2005 he took over the artistic direction of the "Beethoven Academie Antwerp" and in 2013 the artistic direction of the Festival de Saint-Riquier .
