history

The originally independent company was founded in 1924 by Raymond E. DeWalt, the inventor of the radial arm circular saw , as DeWalt Products Co. in Leola (Pennsylvania) . The company expanded rapidly and moved to a new office building and factory in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1929 . In 1947 the company was restructured and DeWalt Inc. renamed. In 1949 DeWalt was sold to the American Machine and Foundry , which in turn sold it to Black & Decker in 1960.

In 1992, Black & Decker began realigning its power tools, which were positioned in the professional and high-quality segment, with DeWalt and increased its activities in the global market. In 1994 DeWalt took over the power tools and woodworking machine division of the German power tool manufacturer Elu and expanded its range of cordless and other tools with the acquired German technology.

The Elu brand was initially continued on the German tool market and production continued at the Elu locations, even if more and more devices were identical to those from DeWalt. In addition, production was outsourced to the Czech Republic and China. The main plants in Germany and Switzerland were closed. It was not until 2001 that the group decided to gradually abolish the Elu brand and henceforth only sell power tools under the DeWalt brand.
