The De Ruyter was a Dutch 1st class screw steamer (steam liner ) of the late 19th century. She entered service in 1885 and was the fifth ship to be named after Admiral Michiel de Ruyter . She made various trips in Europe, South America and East Asia. Her career in the navy ended after her return from East Asia in 1899. She was broken off in 1900.

history

After construction in Amsterdam in 1879, the ship was put into service in 1885. During a trip through the Suez Canal to the Dutch East Indies, engine damage occurred which could only be repaired at the Onrust shipyard in Batavia . This was followed by missions to protect Dutch merchant ships in Brazil and from 1896 she was again deployed in East Asia and transported relief supplies for the victims of the Ambon earthquake . After returning to the Netherlands, the De Ruyter was retired in 1899 and sold for scrapping in 1900.
