De Tijd (Netherlands)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

De Tijd (Die Zeit) was a supraregional Dutch daily newspaper with an editorial office in Amsterdam .

history

The first edition of Tijd appeared on June 17, 1845. Initially based in 's-Hertogenbosch , it initially appeared three times a week and in 1846 moved to Amsterdam. In 1848 it became a daily newspaper for a time and a year later it became a daily newspaper. As a Catholic paper, De Tijd mainly competed with De Maasbode and Het Spectrum , but shortly before the Second World War it was only able to show a previous record of around 10,000 copies.

In 1941 De Tijd benefited from the Maasbode ban imposed by the German occupiers . The main reason for this ban was the decree of the Catholic bishops to withhold the sacraments from members of the Dutch National Socialists NSB . The circulation rose to over 80,000 copies in 1943, but in the last phase of the war the newspaper had to gradually switch to a weekly publication.

After the war, the newspaper's circulation initially fell to around half, but then experienced a slight upward trend. 1959 De Maasbode was taken over. In 1931, he had already finalized a takeover of Tijd , but this was then called off after 350 Catholic dignitaries had worked for an independent Tijd . The newspaper was now called De Tijd-Maasbode , but changed the name back to the old short form at the end of 1965. The composite name was only retained in Rotterdam (the Maasbode's editorial office ) and the surrounding area until 1972.

At the end of 1965, Joop Lücker , who had earned a legendary reputation at de Volkskrant but had to leave in 1964, became the newspaper's second editor-in-chief. Although the circulation doubled from 1966 to 1968 to the previous record of over 100,000 copies, he could not prevent the situation from subsequently developing to the disadvantage of the newspaper. The successes could not hide the fact that a number of other newspapers were in front of De Tijd . The end of the pillar of the Netherlands meant that Catholic newspapers either gave up their religious background or disappeared from the market. After Lücker had cleared the field again at the end of 1972, De Tijd no longer saw any country as a daily newspaper, after which it was switched to a weekly publication in 1974.

In 1990 De Tijd merged with HP Magazine (formerly Haagsche Post ) to form the weekly political magazine HP / De Tijd , which is still published today. Thus, there is no longer any connection to its origins as a Catholic daily newspaper.
