De Winton & Co was a factory in Caernarfon , Wales from 1854-1901 . It was an important supplier to the shipbuilding industry. The delivery program of the company also included all the machines and tools for the mining and processing of slate were necessary, stationary steam engines and narrow gauge - steam engines with vertical vertical boiler for use in Welsh slate mines and other industrial enterprises.

history

The company has its origins in the 1840s in a small foundry founded by Owen Thomas at the slate port of Caernarfon. In cooperation with Jeffreys Parry de Winton , he established the Union Foundry, particularly for street lighting gas lamps . In the 25 years of its existence, the company has built ship steam engines with up to 200 bhp and their boilers as well as over 60 quarry locomotives of a similar design.

Jeffreys Parry de Winton was mayor of Caernarfon from 1870–1872 and ran the company until around 1890.

After that, it was poorly managed when the unsuccessful focus on marketing a French invention led to the company going bankrupt in 1901.

The De Winton steam engine at Glynllifon was restored by chimney builder Fred Dibnah after he had actually been called there to demolish the chimney.

De Winton locomotives

At least six locomotives are still preserved. De Winton's archives have not been preserved, so there is no complete list of all locomotives manufactured by De Winton.
