The Brecon Mountain Railway ( Welsh : Rheilffordd Mynydd Brycheiniog ) is a museum , narrow-gauge railway with a gauge of 603 mm (1 foot 11¾ inches ). It runs north of the town of Merthyr Tydfil along the Pontsticill reservoir and the upper Pentwyn reservoir through the Brecon Beacons to Torpantau .

Route

The railway line, which was built in several stages between 1978 and 2014, runs for around 8 kilometers of the northern section of the discontinued standard-gauge Brecon and Merthyr Railway from Pant via Pontsticill and Dolygaer to a new station in Torpantau.

It ends near the 610 m long Torpantau Tunnel, the highest tunnel in Great Britain.

One of the advantages of the train is that tourists can reach remote parts of the Brecon Beacons National Park without having to drive. Due to a condition of the planning authorities for the reconstruction, parking spaces are only available at Pant train station, outside the national park.

The Brecon Mountain Railway is a member of the Great Little Trains of Wales .
