Deborah Loewenberg Ball

Deborah Loewenberg Ball (* 1954 ) is an American math teacher.

Life

Ball graduated from Michigan State University with a bachelor's degree in French and Elementary Education in 1976 and a master's degree in education in 1982. From 1981 to 1983 she taught undergraduate courses in mathematics at the university and received her PhD in 1988 (Knowledge and reasoning in mathematical pedagogy: Examining what prospective teachers bring to teacher education). From 1975 to 1988 she was a primary school teacher in East Lansing and continued to be a teacher until 1992, but was already assistant professor from 1988 and from 1991 associate professor in teacher training at her alma mater. In 1996 she became a professor at the University of Michigan . In 2000 she became Arthur F. Thurnau Professor and was director of teacher training in 2004/05. In 2005 she became a William H. Payne Collegiate Professor . From 2005 to 2016 she was Dean of the School of Education. From 2011 she was the director of TeachingWorks at the University of Michigan, a teacher education program. It emerged from the Teacher Education Initiative founded in 2004 for more practical teacher training.

It is particularly concerned with assessing the pedagogical skills of math teachers and improving their training during the first years of practical experience in schools.

She continues to teach in elementary schools in the summer alongside her university work.

She is on the American National Mathematics Advisory Panel and the Commission on the Future of Undergraduate Education. Ball is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society and the American Educational Research Association , member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2014) and the National Academy of Education .

In 2017 she received the Felix Klein Medal .
