The Dechanthof

The Dechanthofgasse is a 20-meter-long street in Freistadt in Upper Austria's Mühlviertel . The alley was laid out when the city was founded in the 13th century and is located within the city walls of the old town . The alley begins at Eisengasse and leads over Höllplatz to Dechanthofplatz. The dean courtyard is a small, triangular square, about 30 meters long and up to Hutterergasse enough. A second, narrow passage leads to the parish church . The alley and the square are named after the Dechanthof (rectory).

There are only six houses along today's Dechanthofgasse and Dechanthofplatz, all of which are listed. In the two great city fires in 1507 and 1516, all the houses in the city were destroyed, including in this area. Due to the city fires, many old documents from the time the houses were built have been lost.

For around seven years now, plans to convert Eisengasse and the adjacent Höllplatz (including Dechanthofgasse) into a pedestrian zone have been discussed in the municipal council. So far, no majority has been achieved for the facility. The affected businesses in Eisengasse are against this project.
