The Dechanthof Freistadt is a mighty, three-storey four-wing building and serves as the rectory of the Roman Catholic parish Freistadt and the seat of the Deanery Freistadt in the Upper Austrian Mühlviertel . In 1354 the rectory was mentioned for the first time and serves as accommodation for the priests and the dean and as the administrative seat of the parish with its three churches. The Dechanthof bears house number Dechanthofplatz  1. The building and part of the fortifications are under monument protection .

history

The rectory has existed at this point in the city for more than 1354. The previous building of the current building is no longer preserved. The first big fire in the city started in 1507 at the Dechanthof, which cremated the entire city. A partial renovation took place around 1600; the south-western, late Gothic part dates from this period. At the end of the 17th century, it was redesigned by Carlo Antonio Carlone . Around 1735 the building was rebuilt by Johann Michael Prunner and the facade redesigned, which can still be seen today.

Foundation houses
South side with Dechanthofturm

Eight of the parish's nine foundation houses were located around the Dechanthof, some of which were later demolished because they were in disrepair. As a result, there is now a gap in the row of houses on Dechanthofplatz. These ecclesiastical foundation houses were founded in the 14th and 15th centuries and fell into disrepair in the 17th century as income declined. Some of the houses were converted into gardens and some were reused when the Dechanthof was enlarged.

architecture

The Dechanthof is a mighty, three-storey four-wing building around an irregular rectangular courtyard. The baroque main facade on Dechanthofplatz has tall, slender fields with a late Baroque pilaster structure above the grooved base . The main portal, a round arched rustic portal, is arranged asymmetrically. In the arched field above the window, which is above the main entrance, there is a picture of the Good Shepherd . To the side of the main portal is a 19th century walk-through door that serves as an additional entrance. The secondary facades date from the end of the 17th century and are decorated with local stone blocks and field decorations.

The courtyard facade is late baroque, like the main facade. The former Renaissance arcade on the first floor in the east wing was walled up in the course of the baroque redesign.

The interior of the building is at the entrance to the north (from Dechanthofplatz) is equipped with a groin vault and leads to a staircase. One room in the north-west is a two-pillar room with groined vaults from around 1600. The rooms in the east wing are equipped with lancet barrel vaults and a courtyard-side corridor with groined vaults serves as access to these rooms. On the stairwell in the south wing there are late Gothic crossed shoulder arch portals from the first quarter of the 16th century, the stairwell is late Gothic. The rooms in the west wing are equipped with lancet barrel vaults. Many rooms have stucco mirrors from the 18th and 19th centuries. The hall on the upper floor (east wing) is equipped with a baroque stucco decoration by Carlo Antonio Carlone from around 1687/90. One picture shows the adoration of the Magi. The vestibule is baroque, the late baroque roof structure is lying and carved in parts.
