Cover (protection)
Cover is protection by an object . This can be both a privacy screen and a protection against physical attacks or their effects (e.g. fire or bomb splinters ).
This object can be a feature of the terrain (e.g. rock , wall , tree , hole in the ground ), an object (e.g. the engine block of a motor vehicle) or an object or structure specially created for this purpose (e.g. high seat in the Hunting, camouflage nets , trenches , foxholes , bunkers ).
At the beginning of the Cold War , the motto of a civil defense training course was " Duck and cover "; this training described useful measures in the event of a distant nuclear explosion . In later years, duck and cover was criticized because the measures described (taking cover and covering yourself with something) could fake the population the possibility of surviving a nuclear war .
Full / partial coverage
As a rule, soldiers always try to take partial cover in combat . The principle that effect takes precedence over cover applies . H. the soldier takes cover so far that it is still possible to work with his weapon. In the military, one speaks of full cover when the ability to work is given up in favor of cover.
