The DeepL Translator is an online service of DeepL GmbH in Cologne for machine translation , which was put online on 28 August 2017th When it is published, the service claims to be blindly studying the offers of the competition. a. Google Translate , Microsoft Translator, and Facebook .

Translation method

The service uses convolutional neural networks trained on Linguee 's database . The translation is generated by a supercomputer that reaches 5.1 peta flops and is powered by cheap hydropower in Iceland. CNNs are generally somewhat better suited for long connected word sequences, but have not been used by the competition in favor of recurrent neural networks due to their weaknesses . At DeepL, the weaknesses are countered with additional tricks, some of which are publicly known.

Word documents in .docx format and PowerPoint presentations (.pptx) are also translated. Footnotes, formatting and embedded images are retained.

So far, the languages German, English, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Japanese and Chinese (Mandarin) have been translated in both directions.

use

Free to use

Use is free of charge up to a text length of 5000 characters. Commercial customers can use a paid programming interface to embed DeepL in their own software. In addition, DeepL is financed through advertising on its sister website linguee.com.

Paid subscription

The paid subscription service DeepL Pro for professional translators, companies and developers has been available since March 2018 and has a programming interface and a software plug-in for CAT tools , including SDL Trados Studio . In contrast to the free version, translated texts are not saved, and the text length limit in the input field to 5,000 characters is no longer applicable. The price model provides for a monthly basic fee that includes a fixed amount of text. Any additional text is calculated based on the number of characters.

In October 2018, the pricing model was revised so that instead of just one payment model, there are various options to choose from.

Company history

BW

The company was founded in 2008 by Gereon Frahling and Leonard Fink in Cologne under the name Linguee GmbH . They built a dictionary for 25 languages that can be used for translations via an online service. With the publication of DeepL 2017, the company name was changed to DeepL GmbH. In March 2020, Deepl announced that it had achieved a significant increase in performance over its competitors by modifying its AI system.
