Deiroptyx is a genus of medium-sized lizards from the group of iguanas that occurs in the Greater Antilles . The generic name is derived from the Greek and refers to the characteristic neck crest of the males (“deir” = hump + “ptyx” = fold).
features
Deiroptyx species are medium-sized lizards and reach head-to-trunk lengths of 4.3 to 16 cm. Females often stay a little smaller than males. However, many species show no sexual dimorphism . Ctenonotus species are usually brownish or greyish, less often green.
The monophyly of the genus is supported by 47 apomorphies , 42 of which are molecular biological and 5 morphological .
The morphological include the parietal eye in the suture of the pair of parietal bones , the T-shaped interclavicle, a bone that connects the actual collarbone to the breastbone (sternum), 3 or 4 lumbar vertebrae and usually 7 (6 to 10) caudal vertebrae in front of the first Autotomy Capable Vertebrae. The caudal vertebrae in front of the first vertebra capable of autotomy do not have transverse processes behind them. The post frontal , a small, paired cover bone of the roof of the skull, is usually present. Palatine teeth may be present or absent. The splenial bone, a small bone in the lower jaw of amphibians and reptiles, is absent in most cases.
There is no gender dimorphism , i. H. Males and females look alike.
distribution
Deiroptyx species are found in Cuba , Hispaniola, and Puerto Rico .

The genus comprises a total of 21 species, which are summarized in a total of 5 species groups. One of these occurs (with only one species) in Puerto Rico and two each in Cuba and Hispaniola.
