To the open-air stage

The Deister Freilichtbühne ( short: DFB ) is an open-air theater in Barsinghausen, Lower Saxony . The stage was opened in 1931. Since then, almost a million spectators have attended the amateur theater performances , musicals , concerts and guest performances that have been held here. The stage takes its name from the Deister , a mountain range in the Calenberger Bergland , on the edge of which lies the town of Barsinghausen.

history

In front of the open-air stage

The stage was created on the initiative of the then Barsinghausen rector Otto Backhaus. In 1928 he sent a written request to the State Chamber of Monasteries in Hanover to lease him the site of a former quarry near Barsinghausen. He sees it as his "task to create an open-air theater in our place, which could serve at the same time as many other events to maintain the current education of the people (concerts in our high school, the choirs, lectures, etc.)". Already at the end of the same year the willingness of the monastery chamber to cooperate was evident, and construction of the stage system could begin the following year. The opening took place on August 11, 1931 with a staging of the life of the Tyrolean freedom fighter Andreas Hofer . From now on, with the exception of 1941, up to four plays were presented on the open-air stage. However, there were no more games between 1944 and 1948. During the Second World War, the stage was completely destroyed and looted. It was not until 1951 that the stage could be rebuilt in around 28,000 working hours thanks to the support of GSO 524 , an organization of British civil employees stationed in Germany, and the municipality of Barsinghausen. After the local theater group had resumed theater operations in 1949, the Deister open-air theater reopened on June 17, 1951 with the play Frauenlist auf Heidecksburg . In 2007, a large part of the stage system was destroyed by Hurricane Kyrill , but was immediately rebuilt. For the 2020 season, the previously existing benches were replaced by seating, among other things financed by the sale of chair sponsorships.

Theater on the Deister open-air stage

Since the reopening, the stage has been seamlessly played with several pieces each summer. The Barsinghausen theater players have been staging their own children's play since 1969 ; the first work performed here was King Drosselbart . By 2008 alone, the Deister Freilichtbühne Barsinghausen eV association had performed 140 open-air and five hall pieces.

business

The operation of the stage with around 1,000 seats is ensured by over 700 voluntary association members. In the 2019 season, over 19,000 visitors came to the 41 performances of the Deister open-air theater. The association is a member of the Association of German Open Air Theaters (VDF).
