Delcy Eloina Rodríguez Gomez (born May 18, 1969 ) is a lawyer and Venezuelan politician. She has been Vice President of Venezuela since June 14, 2018. You are also subordinate to SEBIN , the secret service of Venezuela. Previously, she was Foreign Minister, Minister of Communication and Information and Chair of the Constituent Assembly.

Origin and education

Delcy Rodríguez is the daughter of Jorge Antonio Rodríguez, the co-founder and general secretary of the "Socialist League", a party that later became the current socialist ruling party, the PSUV . In 1976, when Delcy was seven, her father was tortured to death in a Venezuelan prison. After leaving school she studied at the Central University of Venezuela in Caracas Jura , a postgraduate course in labor law led to France and Britain. Her brother Jorge Rodríguez is a psychiatrist and Venezuela's Minister for Communication and Information since 2017.

Political career

Rodríguez already held public offices in the Hugo Chavez era , but she made her political career from 2013 under Nicolás Maduro . According to Deutsche Welle, she is considered the most powerful woman in Venezuela and is a close confidante of Maduros. She took over the post of Venezuelan Vice President after the presidential elections in 2018 from Tareck El Aissami , who was appointed Minister of Industry.

As of September 2017, she was initially sanctioned by Canada for breaking the Venezuelan constitutional order. After her appointment as Venezuelan Vice President, she received entry and property bans from the European Union, and later also imposed sanctions by Switzerland and the United States .
