Tareck Zaidan El Aissami Maddah (born November 12, 1974 in El Vigía , Mérida ) is a Venezuelan politician. He is a nephew of the Syrian politician Shibli al-Aysami .

Life

On September 8, 2008, Tareck El Aissami was appointed Minister of the Interior and Justice at the age of 33 under the presidency of Hugo Chávez . Before that he was Deputy Minister for Public Security and Member of Parliament. On December 16, 2012, Tareck El Aissami was elected governor of the state of Aragua with 55.56% . He is a member of the national board of the governing party Partido Socialista Unido de Venezuela (PSUV).

In January 2017, El Aissami was appointed Vice President by Venezuelan President Maduro. As a result, on February 13, 2017, the Office of Foreign Assets Control , under the United States Treasury Department , accepted El Aissami in its sanctions program for Venezuela because he was allegedly involved in drug trafficking. The NZZ reports that "he was said to have organized cocaine transports on a large scale from Colombia via Venezuela to Mexico and the USA, and had contacts with the Los Zetas drug cartel in Mexico". Americans who do business with him face fines of up to US $ 5 million or up to 30 years in prison.
