New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) is an art museum in New Orleans . The museum was founded in 1911 and was called the Delgado Museum of Art until 1971 . It is located on One Collins C. Diboll Circle by City Park.

history

In 1910 the museum building was erected on a site provided by the City Park Improvement Association. The design comes from the architect Samuel Abraham Marx (1885–1964; Büro Lebenbaum & Marx in Chicago), the consulting engineer was Benjamin Morgan Harrod . The construction was financed by a $ 150,000 donation from the art patron and businessman Isaac Delgado (1839–1912), after whom the museum was initially named. On December 16, 1911, the Delgado Museum of Art was opened as the third art museum in the southern United States.

Running the museum in the early years was an informal affair, often taken over by members of the board of directors. Charles Wellington Boyle , who initially worked for the museum as its first curator, was its director from 1922 to 1925. Thereafter, until 1939 Ellsworth Woodward (1861-1939) headed the Delgado Museum of Art, where he placed particular emphasis on the artistic education of the population and the promotion of artists from the South, while building the collection was initially less important. The museum was funded by the City of New Orleans, and exhibitions were often supported by local art organizations such as the Art Association of New Orleans. In 1948 a professionally trained director took over the management of the museum for the first time.

In November 1971 the museum was renamed the New Orleans Museum of Art. At the same time, three new wings were opened for galleries, an auditorium and educational events.
