Deltarune ( own notation : deltarune ) is an episodic indie - computer role-playing game of the American developer Toby Fox. The first chapter of the game, which also functions as a demo version , was released on October 31, 2018 for Microsoft Windows and macOS . On February 28, 2019, the first chapter was also released for Nintendo Switch and Playstation 4.

Deltarune shares some characters with Undertale , the developer's previous game, but is not a continuation of the plot, but takes place in a different world.

Gameplay

In Deltarune you move your character through the world in order to interact with it and its inhabitants. A multitude of puzzles can be found in the world, which often also have to be solved in order to progress. There are also isolated bullet hell segments, similar to those in fights.

Combat system

If you meet an enemy resident, a fight begins. Most fights can be ended either violently or peacefully; unlike in Undertale , however, it is not possible to kill your opponents in combat. If you defeat them violently, they run away instead. Therefore, it is also not possible to be level to increase.

In the course of the game you control up to three characters, to whom you can give commands in combat. Each character can attack, inflicting damage to the enemy and defend what the Tension Points (German: stress points; abbreviation: TP ) increased and the damage that the opponent this character inflicts in the next round is reduced. Only the group leader, who is also controlled outside of combat, can use ACT s (German: to act), which differ depending on the opponent and have different effects. Some ACT s also contain other characters, but these do not allow them to take their own action during the round. The non-human characters can use the collected HP to use magic. Various items can also be used by all characters in combat, for example for healing.

Violent combat can be ended by inflicting enough damage on the opponents. There are, however, several ways to end it peacefully. On the one hand, it is possible to make opponents no longer want to fight, mostly through a certain sequence of ACTs , whereby they can then be shown mercy; on the other hand, they can also often be made drowsy by ACTs , thereby applying a soothing spell that removes them from combat. Some fights end on their own with the enemy disappearing.

If the player attacks, a bar appears on the screen, which moves towards a white border in its size. If the player confirms his selection, the attack is carried out, the damage depending on how close the bar got to the border. If it was in the border during the attack, the damage is greatest.

The opponents attack through bullet hell segments. During this, the player controls a heart within a box that the opponents are attacking. Touching the attacks will damage the character who was the target of the attack. If the attack but, striped without being touched, increasing the TP .

action

The main character of the game is Kris , an adopted child of the Dreemurr family , who is the only person who lives in the city of Hometown , which is otherwise inhabited exclusively by monsters. Toriel, known from Undertale , brings Kris to school, where Kris then meets classmate Susie. When the two finally want to get some new chalk, they find a cupboard. Strangely enough, the atmosphere becomes dark, but the two of them decided to go inside, where they suddenly end up in the “Dark World”. There they meet Dark Prince Ralsei, who explains that he, Susie and Kris are chosen heroes who have to close the Dark Fountain because the King of the Dark Land has usurped control.

Susie is skeptical at first and doesn't want to help at all, but then the three meet Lancer, the king's son, who sets traps badly made for them. Susie Lancer soon joins, but the two then join Ralsei and Kris again. When Lancer realizes that they have to fight the king, Lancer has the three heroes brought to the cave. There Susie can escape and fights Lancer. Ralsei and Kris are freed and make their way to the roof of the castle, where they meet the king. Depending on whether you fought monsters or spared them, the end of the boss fight changes.

The three manage to close the dark fountain. Kris and Susie return when they eventually become friends. Susie says goodbye for now. Then you have the opportunity to explore the city with Kris. The player will see many familiar characters again, including Sans. When you go to bed, a cutscene follows where Kris tears out their soul and throws them into the birdcage in the room. After that, Kris kneels in the middle of the room, holds a knife and looks into the camera, where a red eye and a big grin can be seen.

development

Deltarune creator Toby Fox got the first inspiration to develop a computer game when he saw characters in a card game by Kanotynes. He finalized the idea through Undertale, but the original inspiration became Deltarune.

On October 30, 2018, the Undertale account on Twitter began sending strange messages that eventually asked the reader to return in 24 hours. The next day, the account sent a link to the Deltarune page where the game can be downloaded.
