The Democracy Bell is a memorial that is located on Augustusplatz in Leipzig . The monument is a brass-colored , egg-shaped bell of bronze , which is cm high about 150th The bell is dedicated to the Peaceful Revolution and was inaugurated on the 20th anniversary of the Monday demonstration on October 9, 1989, i.e. October 9, 2009.

On Mondays, the bell strikes twelve times at 6:35 pm, in relation to the start of the Monday demonstration on October 9, 1989. On all other days, the bell strikes once at random between one and up to twelve strikes every full hour between 8 am and 8 pm. A haiku by Durs Grünbein is engraved in the granite ring around the egg .

An offer by the East German foundry network from 2007 to give the city a bell on October 9, 2009 was accepted by Walter Christian Steinbach in summer 2008 . The concept by Via Lewandowsky won the competition that determined the design of the monument . The bell was cast in August 2009 in the Lauchhammer art and bell foundry .

At Easter 2013, the democracy bell was knitted as a hen by a guerrilla knitting group.
