Democratic Party of South Tyrol

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Democratic Party of South Tyrol (abbreviation PD , Italian Partito Democratico Alto Adige ) is the South Tyrolean offshoot of the Democratic Party, which is active throughout Italy .

The party sees itself as an inter-ethnic and cross-language force, as can be seen in the German translation, which can also be found in the local symbol.

Since it was founded in 2007, when the national Democratic Party was founded, it has been active in the province of Bolzano; from 2008 to 2018 she was also represented in the state government as a coalition partner of the South Tyrolean People's Party .

After the state elections in 2018 , in which the party had to accept losses for the first time since it first ran, it is part of the opposition.

history

The Democratic Party was founded in 2007 as an amalgamation of the left-wing democrats and the left-wing liberal force Democrazia è Libertà - La Margherita . In South Tyrol, the party has always had a special position internally: Although the national democratic party is divided into regional unions (according to the Italian regions), the South Tyrolean branch received an equal position as a provincial union due to the applicable autonomy provisions in the province.

In the first state parliament elections in 2008, it achieved 6.0% of the vote and thus 2 seats in the state parliament. Christian Tommasini , the first elected member of the PD, then received a post in the state government as a representative of the Italian language group.

In 2013 the party recorded slight gains, with 6.8% of the vote. The SVP, which at that time no longer had an absolute majority for the first time, was now forced to look for a coalition partner and formed an alliance with the PD, Tommasini remained in his office in the state government as a regional councilor for Italian education and culture and as Vice Governor.

The party suffered losses in the 2018 state elections, its worst result with 3.8%. The previous Provincial Councilor Tommasini was clearly voted out, he lost over 4,000 preferential votes. The current and only representative of the party in the state parliament is Sandro Repetto .

In November 2018, the governing party SVP decided on a pact with the Lega , which was successful in the state elections , whereby the continuation of talks that had started on a government made up of the SVP, the Greens and the PD was rejected.
