The Pinus River , also Uapushkakamau-shipu , is an approximately 135 km long left tributary of the Churchill River in the central southeast of the Labrador Peninsula in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador .
River course
The headwaters of the Pinus River forms an approximately 440 m high lake area 135 km west of Happy Valley-Goose Bay . The Pinus River flows in a predominantly east-southeast direction. About halfway along the river, it crosses the two lakes Mitshishu-utshishtun and Uapushkakamau . At river kilometer 4, the Trans-Labrador Highway crosses the Pinus River. This finally flows into the Churchill River about 44 km above the Muskrat Falls .
Hydrology
The Pinus River drains an area of about 1070 km². The catchment area borders on that of the Goose River to the north, that of the Metchin River to the west and that of the Cache River to the southwest . At the gauge 41 km above the mouth, the mean discharge is 16.3 m³ / s. In May, the Pinus River usually carries the largest amount of water with an average of 62.3 m³ / s.
Wildlife
In the river system of the Pinus River probably following types of fish: three-spined and nine-spined stickleback , brook trout , pike and Arctic Norway and the Redhorse TYPES Catostomus Catostomus (longnose sucker) and Catostomus commersonii (white sucker). The Muskrat Falls on the Churchill River prevent fish migration of anadromous salmon in the Pinus River. Beavers , muskrats , American water shrews and North American river otters use the river as a habitat. In the wetlands there are Wilsonbe Cassins , Greater Yellowshanks , Sandpipers , Lone Sandpipers , Odin's Grouse and Lesser Mudstripers .
