The Metchin River , also Maikan-nipiu-shipiss , is an approximately 130 km long left tributary of the Churchill River in the central southeast of the Labrador Peninsula in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador . The river is also sometimes referred to as the East Metchin River or East Metchim River .

River course

The Metchin River forms the outflow of the 500  m high Disappointment Lake (Kaishikashkau) . It initially flows 50 km in a predominantly westerly direction. Hope Lake and Kaishikashkasht are located on the upper reaches . At river kilometer 84 the Metchin River leaves a heavily branched lake in a southerly direction. This lake has another outflow to the west that flows to Smallwood Reservoir . The Metchin River flows southeast to a larger lake about 20 km and then turns to the southwest. The Metchin River then flows through the two lakes Maikan-natuashu and Maikan-nipiss . The Metchin River flows in a south-southwest direction for its last 35 km. The Trans-Labrador Highway crosses the river at river kilometer 21 . There is a discharge level here. About 1.2 km downstream, the Wilson River flows into the Metchin River from the east. Another 1.7 km downstream the Tshinusheu-shipiss flows into the river from the right. The Metchin River finally flows into the Churchill River 48 km east-southeast of the Churchill Falls hydroelectric power station .

Hydrology

The Metchin River drains an area of about 3400 km². At the gauge 20.5 km above the mouth, at the point where the Trans-Labrador Highway crosses the river, the mean discharge is 21.5 m³ / s. In May, the Metchin River usually carries the largest amount of water with an average of 81.9 m³ / s.
