Dendrogyra cylindricus is a hard coral (Scleractinia) from the Caribbean . It is particularly common on the coasts of the Bahamas and Jamaica . It lives at depths of one to twenty meters in calm reef areas with little currents . In German it is called column coral or candelabra coral . It is the only species in the genus Dendrogyra .

The coral forms large pillars up to three meters high. The tips of the colony can break off easily, but grow back on the base and develop new columns. Even if a large colony overturns, it grows on the substrate and forms vertical structures again, which grow on the old colony lying horizontally on the ground. In the course of time, large coral stocks can arise.

The light brown polyps of Dendrogyra cylindricus have expanded throughout the day, which is why the colonies have a furry appearance.
