Denis Bédard

Denis Bédard (born January 13, 1950 in Québec ) is a Canadian organist and composer .

Life

Denis Bédard, born in Québec in 1950 , first studied music at the Conservatoire de musique de Québec and completed his studies in organ , harpsichord , chamber music , counterpoint and fugue with distinction. Further studies took him to Paris and Montreal as well as to Amsterdam (together with Gustav Leonhardt ). In 1975 he won the “Prix d'Europe” and the CBC Radio Talent Competition (1978). From 1981 to 1989 he was professor at the Conservatoire de musique de Québec and from 2001 to 2004 at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver . In addition, Denis Bédard was organist at the Church of St-Coeur-de-Marie in Québec for 19 years and in September 1997 became organist at the Church of St-Roch, also in Québec. Since September 2001 he has been organist and music director at the Holy Rosary Cathedral in Vancouver. He is also an active concert organist and has given concerts in Canada, the USA and Brazil.

Denis Bédard's compositions include 15 chamber music works, orchestral, vocal music and several organ works. He has composed works for Radio Canada, CBC, the Québec Symphony Orchestra and numerous musicians in Canada, England and the USA. Many of his works have been performed internationally (USA, France, England, Switzerland, Holland, Germany, Austria, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Czech Republic, South Africa, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Japan, Brazil, Estonia), especially with international organ / Saxophone Conferences. Some of his works have been recorded on CD. His music, mostly tonal and melodic, impresses with its formal simplicity and seeks communication with the listener.
