inscription

Translation from Turkish:

“This memorial is dedicated to the memory of the military attaché of the Embassy of the Republic of Turkey in Ottawa, Colonel Atilla Altıkat, who died in an attack carried out by terrorists on August 29, 1982 at this intersection. This memorial, dedicated to all diplomats and civil servants who fell while serving abroad, bears witness to the principles of lasting peace, freedom and coexistence shared by Canada and Turkey. With its perfect spherical shape, the monument symbolizes the final resting place of the fallen. The broad side of the sphere directed towards heaven opens in the direction of the 'door of eternity', the narrow side directed towards earth opens in the direction of the 'tunnel of time'. Every single metal prism inside the monument symbolizes the fallen, who sacrificed their lives. The prism inside the 'time tunnel' lets the memory of the fallen Colonel Atilla Altıkat live on. May the souls of the fallen be blessed and may their final resting place be in heaven. "

inauguration

The memorial was opened on September 20, 2012 by Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu and Canadian Foreign Minister John Russell Baird .
