The monument of the unknown PLAN soldiers in Ondeshifiilwa ( English Monument of the Unknown PLAN Soldiers in Ondeshifiilwa ) is a war memorial of the unknown soldier in Ondeshifiilwa in the Ohangwena region of northern Namibia . It has been a National Monument since September 1, 2011 .
background
On April 1 (or 2), 1989, some fighters of the People's Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN) gathered in Ondeshifiilwa to surrender their weapons when the Namibian liberation struggle was over . This intention was apparently misunderstood by the South African Army , which opened fire on the soldiers. 21 PLAN fighters were killed and buried in a mass grave. A memorial and gravestone reminds of the fallen.
