The monument of the unknown PLAN soldiers in Outapi ( English Monument of the Unknown Soldiers in PLAN Outapi ) is a war memorial of the unknown soldier far from Outapi in the region Omusati in northern Namibia . It has been a National Monument since September 1, 2011 .
background
On April 1st 1989 some fighters of the People's Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN) of the Namibian liberation struggle gathered in the village of Onhokolo to celebrate. The South African army is said to have marched in after a tip and opened fire on the soldiers. 20 PLAN fighters were killed and buried in a mass grave. A gravestone erected a little later by SWAPO commemorates the fallen.
