Monument to Miguel de Cervantes (Valladolid)
The monument to Miguel de Cervantes in Valladolid , the capital of the province of the same name in the Spanish autonomous region of Castile and León , was erected in 1877.
The monument , erected in honor of the Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes (1547–1616), has stood at the University of Valladolid in Plaza de la Universidad since 1889 . It originally stood on a square in front of the Casa de Cervantes in Valladolid, where Miguel de Cervantes lived in 1605. Since 1862 there has been a museum on the life and work of the writer in this building.
The bronze statue , which stands on a high granite base with a leaf frieze , was created by Nicolás Fernández de la Oliva, a professor of the Escuela de Bellas Artes de Valladolid . Miguel de Cervantes is shown in life size, in courtly clothes and with a ruff , with a book in his left hand and a belted rapier .
