The Monument to Nicholas I is a monument erected in memory of the Russian Tsar Nicholas I in Saint Petersburg in Russia .

location

It is centrally located on Isaac's Square in the city center of Saint Petersburg.

Design and history

The monument was built on a decree from Alexander II in 1855. It was executed by the sculptors Auguste de Montferrand and Peter Clodt von Jürgensburg between 1856 and 1859.

Nicholas the I is shown in the monument as a riding guard on a rearing horse. The weight of the large bronze sculpture rests only on the horse's two hind legs. It is believed that the idea of portraying as a riding guard came from Montferrand and that he submitted the proposal to Clodt von Jürgensburg.

The base, designed in the Baroque style , is made of granite , porphyry and marble and is based on a design by Montferrand. It is decorated with bronze reliefs and four figures. The reliefs praise the deeds of Nicholas I. The four figures created by R. Salemann stand for faith, wisdom, justice and strength.
