The monument to Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill , Russian Памятник Сталину, Рузвельту и Черчиллю , the Russian sculptor created Zurab Tsereteli for the leaders of the "Big Three" on the peninsula of Crimea .

location

The monument is located in the park near the Livadia Palace (the former summer residence of the Russian emperors) in Livadia , three kilometers from Yalta .

history

The Yalta Conference took place in Livadija from February 4 to 11, 1945 . On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of this event, the Russian authorities planned the memorial in 2005 in coordination with Vladimir Putin and Leonid Kuchma . A massive bronze monument was created: three seated sculptures by Josef Stalin , Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill (as in the protocol photo from the right) . The height of the composition exceeded 2 m, the width 6 m, the weight was 5.5 t. Compared to the original, the artist changed the direction of Roosevelt's gaze and Churchill's head posture so that it now looks as if Churchill and Roosevelt are looking at Stalin together.

However, the installation was not implemented in 2005. In the wake of the Orange Revolution , the Liberals and Democrats of Ukraine gained political weight. The figure of Stalin in the sculpture group sparked protests among the Crimean Tatars because of his disastrous role in the deportation of Crimean Tatars to Central Asia in 1944. Ukrainian activists also referred to the Holodomor . It was not until November 2014, after the annexation of Crimea by Russia , that the monument was handed over to the authorities and unveiled in February 2015 on the 70th anniversary of the conference. Another wave of protests from the Crimean Tatars was completely ignored this time.

The monument is considered to be the first monument to be unveiled after 1956 following a government commission for Joseph Stalin (there are also a large number of memorials to Stalin initiated by individuals or organizations).
