A relief to remember

In the memorial for the Jews murdered in the Holocaust - the Shoah -, Yad Vashem , near the Herzlberg in Jerusalem , there is a memorial that was erected in 1987 especially for the children murdered during the rule of the NSDAP in the German Reich . The monument is a hall that is located on the Yad Vashem site below a rock.

In the access area to this memorial there are initially several white, broken off steles of different heights as symbols for the lives that were broken off by the murderous mania of the National Socialists .

The main room of the memorial is completely mirrored and reflects the light from five candles.

The thousandfold reflection of these five lights creates an enormous size in the room, which symbolically stands for the number of around 1.5 million children and adolescents who were the youngest victims of the National Socialist racial madness and thus describe one of the most shocking acts of destruction of the Shoah .

While the viewers move through the room along a handle in the dim light of the often reflected candles, the names of the murdered children and adolescents, known to this day, with age and location, are read to the visitors on an endless tape. This endless tape takes about three months to reproduce all the names.

A true memorial to the names of those murdered; Yad Vashem ( Hebrew יד ושםfor “monument and name”) got its name from ( Isa 56,5  LUT ): “I will erect a monument to you all in my house and within my walls, I will give you a name that is worth more than sons and daughters: One I give them an eternal name that will never be erased.
