The memorial to Belarus prisoners of war

The monument of Belarusian prisoner of war east of Luttensee Barracks in Upper Bavaria Mittenwald honors the participants of the uprising in Slutsk , an anti-Bolshevik uprising of 1920. It is part of the barracks as a monument in the Bavarian monument list entered.

history

With the end of the Second World War , numerous refugee camps were opened in which so-called Displaced Persons (DPs) were housed. These were civilians who were outside their home country due to the war and who were unable to return or relocate to another country without help. The Luttensee barracks in Mittenwald also served as a refugee camp for DPs. In addition to Belarusians, Ukrainians, Russians and other Eastern Europeans were also accommodated there. The Belarusian refugees organized their own kindergarten with 13 children in the camp as well as a primary school, which at times had 20 to 24 pupils. In addition, the emigrants published a Belarusian-language youth magazine called “Frühling”.

In 1948, the Belarusian camp inmates erected a memorial to commemorate the 28th anniversary of the Slutsk uprising . The uprising took place in the city of Slutsk in 1920 . The participants fought against the Red Army for an independent Belarusian nation-state. In autumn 1949 the camp in the Luttensee barracks was closed.
