Dennis Chmelensky (* in August 1995 in Berlin ) is a German singer. As a boy soprano he sang in the children's choir of the Berlin State Opera and in the Berlin State and Cathedral Choir . He became known through his participation in the second season of the talent show Das Supertalent , which was broadcast in October and November 2008 by the German TV station RTL . Since September 2013 Chmelensky has been studying opera singing at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia in the studio of Marlena Malas and Mikael Eliasen as a Guna S. Mundheim scholarship holder.

Life

Chmelensky was born the second of three children to Falk Thomas-Chmelensky and Andrea Chmelensky. His father works as a teacher, his mother is a social worker. Chmelensky's musical talent was already evident in his early childhood, so that his parents enrolled him in a music school for early musical education. At the age of five he learned the violin, at the age of seven the piano was added as a secondary instrument. At the age of eight he was accepted into the Berlin State Opera Choir, where his vocal talent was trained and he was given the opportunity to stand on stage as a soloist under the conductors Daniel Barenboim , Sir Simon Rattle and Kent Nagano . At the same time he attended the preparatory training at the Reinickendorf Music School and later at the Bela Bartok Music School.

From 2006 to 2012 he was a member of the Staats- und Domchor Berlin and found a mentor and teacher in its director Kai-Uwe Jirka , with whom he studied conducting as a young student at the University of the Arts from 2009 to 2013. He was a student at the Georg-Friedrich-Händel high school , where he graduated from high school in 2013 , and was concertmaster of the school's youth symphony orchestra during his school days.

In 2008, Chmelensky won the national competition Jugend musiziert with special prizes. In autumn of the same year he took part in the second season of the talent show Das Supertalent . With his interpretation of Franz Schubert's Ave Maria , he was eliminated in the semifinals of the show. Nevertheless, talent scouts from the record company Sony Music Entertainment noticed him and signed him. In March, the debut album was released under the title DENNIS with a mixture of classic songs and pop songs, which reached the German album charts in the same month.

Since September 2013 Chmelensky has been studying opera singing at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia in the studio of Marlena Malas and Mikael Eliasen as a Guna S. Mundheim scholarship holder. In Philadelphia he was allowed to take part in opera productions as a baritone since the beginning of his studies and was part of national and international concert tours. His most important roles include Junior (A Quiet Place), Golaud (Pelléas et Mélisande), Papageno (Die Zauberflöte), Schaunard (La Bohème), Blansac (La Scala di Seta) as well as Paul in René Orth and Pulitzer Prize winner Mark Campbell's Opera Empty the House , which premiered in 2016. He sang the opera's world premiere and will recreate the role on stage in a co-production with Opera Philadelphia in 2019.

In summer 2012 he attended the Chautauqua Music Festival and received a scholarship from the Richard Wagner Verband Berlin, in summer 2014 the Kempinski Young Arts Festival in Berlin and again the Chautauqua Music Festival to make his debut as Papageno. In the summers of 2015 and 2017 he received a full scholarship and was an artist at the Schubertiaden in Baden near Vienna, where he studied at the Franz Schubert Institute under the direction of Deen Larsen and took part in numerous master classes and recitals with his piano accompanist.

In 2006 he worked as a supporting actor in the Sat.1 film The Mysterious Treasure of Troy . In the 2010 film UFO he played the lead role Wolfi and in the ZDF film Mörderische Jagd from 2012, he was seen as Mortiz Jäger at the side of Hinnerk Schönemann and Thomas Thieme.
