The Denzler AG was an industrial company based in the district of St. Mang of Kempten (Allgäu) . The twisting mill was given up in the early 1990s.

Company history

The company had its origins in Switzerland : the brothers Heinrich and Friedrich Denzler from Nänikon came to Kempten through family contacts. In May 1864, the two of them bought the land to the right of the Iller and a barrage below Drahtzug. A canal and weir as well as a small turbine house for a hydroelectric power station were built. The mechanical cotton twining mill in Kempten was operated with this system with 2000 spindles.

In 1868, woven threads, sewing threads and fishing net threads were produced. Two years later, the Denzler brothers bought a wooden loop on the opposite side of the Illerside and thus added a wood pulp production facility to the company, which was given up in 1898.

In 1889 the company was renamed a stock corporation . Heinrich Denzler's son became the manager. Between 1890 and 1910 the number of spindles doubled to 16,000 pieces. Before the Second World War , 300 workers found work there. From 1890 embroidery threads were produced for customers in Saxony , Vorarlberg , Switzerland and Northern France. Due to the steady growth, the output of the hydropower plant was expanded to 400 hp.

In 1925 Denzler AG took over a fish net factory for deep-sea and inland fishing. The technical equipment, and therefore also the prerequisite, comes from a bankrupt factory in Gdansk . Sewing thread production began in 1932. In 1938 the range was expanded to include cords. After the World War, the plant came under a trust administration and only serviced the factory equipment. In 1946 Denzler AG built a factory hall and expanded the cord twisting mill, and box making was added as a new business area.

In a major fire in April 1959, the twisting mill was almost completely destroyed. During that time it was decided to stop the sewing thread production in order to adapt to the increased demand for luxury goods. In the 1960s, fine twists, synthetic yarns for weaving mills, knitting mills and hosiery factories were produced in the production rooms along the Iller. The portfolio of nets has been steadily expanded, after fishing nets, for example, curtain, decorative and technical nets were also part of the range. In 1961 the company was renamed Denzler AG , with the previous company, Zwirnerei Denzler AG, entered in the commercial register in 1939. Together with a branch in Bremerhaven , the company had a total of 200 employees. "Denzler's Fischman" was considered an international quality concept at the time.

Towards the end of the 1970s, the Kempten company built a new factory for Kunert KG from Immenstadt in the Allgäu . Men's stockings were made in the rented factory halls.

With the reduction of the fishing quotas in the 1980s, the manufacture of fish nets proved to be unprofitable and was discontinued in 1985. Six years later, Denzler AG was completely given up. The company buildings were partly taken over by furniture stores and by Ott Hydromet . The chimney was blown up in 1998. The Denzler-Park, a small public park with the listed Denzler-Villa, was taken over in 2000/01 by the BSG Allgäu, a housing construction company, from the last owner family Nef.
