The department of Río Chico is located in the west of the province of Santa Cruz in southern Argentina and is one of the seven administrative units in the province.

It is bordered to the north by the department of Lago Buenos Aires , to the east by the department of Magallanes , to the south by the departments of Lago Argentino and Corpen Aike and to the west by Chile .

The capital of the department of Río Chico is Gobernador Gregores .

According to INDEC estimates, the population increased from 2,926 inhabitants (2001) to 3,630 inhabitants in 2005.
