Department S is a British new wave band.

Band history

The group emerged in 1980 from the ska punk band Guns for Hire . This consisted of Vaughan Toulouse (singer), Mike Herbage (guitar), Tony Lordan (bass), Eddie Roxy (keyboards) and Stuart Mizan (drums). With this line-up, the only single, 'I'm Gonna Rough My Girlfriend's Boyfriend Up Tonight' , was released via Korova Records. These were renamed Department S. Your name is inspired by the television series Department S on. The newly formed band had their first appearance in July 1980 in London's Rock Garden. In 1981 Mark Taylor (keyboards) and John Hasler (drums) joined the band.

The debut single Is Vic there? was released in 1980 and reached number 22 in the British charts. The single was produced by Buffin and Overend Watts, who were part of Mott the Hoople . On the flip side Solid Gold Easy Action are Bananarama heard. Going Left Right was released in 1981 and reached number 55.

Then the single I Want was released . Ultimately, the band fell short of expectations and the band lost their record deal with Stiff Records. An album called Sub-Stance had already been recorded but was put on hold. The recordings were only made in 1993 on the compilation Is Vic There? Made available to the public by Mau Mau Records. In 2002, Sub-Stance finally appeared on LTM. In addition to the twelve songs on the album, it also contained live bonus tracks and B-sides.

The singer Vaughan Toulouse died in 1991 of complications from an HIV disease.

Reunion

In the summer of 2007 the band got together for a cover version of the Alvin Stardust song My Coo-Ca-Choo . Mark Bedford from Madness , Terry Edwards and Michelle Brigandag also took part. Eddie Roxy did the vocals. Since then the band has been active again. The band played among others at the Rebellion Festival .

In 2009 the Extended Play Wonderful Day and the self-produced album Mr Nutley's Strange Delusionarium were released , which mainly contained old songs with a new line-up.

In April 2014 Pete Jones ( Public Image Ltd. , Cowboys International and Brian Brain ) joined the band as bassist. The line-up then changed and Eddie Roxy was the only original member left.

On May 27, 2016, the first regular studio album When All Is Said and All Is Done was released, followed by the compilation 45 Revolutions: Singles 1980-2017 , which compiles all the single tracks of their career to date.
