Soběnice depot

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Soběnice Depot (also known as the Soběnice hoard ) is a depot find of the Early Bronze Age Aunjetitz culture from Soběnice , a district of Liběšice u Litoměřic in Ústecký kraj , Czech Republic . It dates between 2000 and 1800 BC. The preserved items from the depot are now in the National Museum in Prague .

Find history

The depot was discovered in August 1859 north of Soběnice while clearing a small hill on the southern slope of the Mühlberg in a field. It was at a depth of about half a cubit (about 30–35 cm).

composition

The depot was placed in a ceramic vessel that had softened in the earth and disintegrated when it was recovered. Its shards were not picked up. The vessel contained numerous bronze objects: an eyelet neck ring , a fragment of another eyelet neck ring or a ring bar , a neck ring with paw ends, four massive oval rings and, according to the original find report, probably 40 marginal ridge axes . The oval rings are two pairs. They have thinned ends decorated with small transverse grooves. Traces of cast seams can be seen on the inside. Both pairs ended up in the museum in Prague, but one pair is missing today. Only 30 of the hatchets made it to Prague. They belong to three different types. Their weight is between 145 g and 446 g. The total weight of all items according to the original find report was 19 pounds (approximately 9.7 kg). The received items weigh together 7.29 kg. The difference suggests that ten axes are actually missing.
