Alexej von Jawlensky: The Hunchback , oil on cardboard, 1906

The hunchback is the title of a painting by the German-Russian painter Alexej von Jawlensky . The work belongs to the inventory of the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus in Munich ; its creation is dated to 1906.

description

The work is an oil painting on cardboard, 49.7 cm × 52.8 cm. On the front there is a signature “A. Jawlensky "and also a monogram lower right" AJ "

The half-profile portrait shows a half-length portrait of a young man with brown hair in a blue sweater against a blue background; the model is sitting on a chair, part of the back can be seen; his gaze is directed past the viewer into the distance. The rather thoughtful expression of the youthful face is determined by the area around the eyes and the special emphasis on the eyebrows. The color of the picture shows a strong complementary contrast between the blue of the sweater and background and the yellow and orange hues of the face. The brown hair and the light blue in the shirt collar and back of the chair create the transitions in the color contrast. The painting style shows an application of paint in short, wide brushstrokes that cross in the background and follow the shape of the head, face and upper body in the portrait.

The title of the picture follows the information on the back of the box, which is inscribed by an unknown hand as follows: Der Bucklige 1905, Bretagne, VK No. 8 . The motif of a person with physical deviations, which is not apparent in this portrait but rather is given by the title, was also taken up by Jawlensky in other works.
