The fox and the cat is an animal fairy tale ( ATU 105). From the second edition of 1819 onwards, it is at position 75 (KHM 75) in the children's and house tales of the Brothers Grimm .

The cat meets the fox and greets him warmly because he is considered so clever. The fox, however, is haughty and boasts of mastering a hundred arts and a sack of lists, while the cat modestly admits that her only art is to save herself from the dogs in a tree. When the dogs arrive, the cat jumps up a tree while they grab the fox. She calls to him: “Untie the sack, Mr. Fuchs, untie the sack!” And “You are stuck with your hundred arts. If you could have crawled up like me, it wouldn't have been for your life. "

Grimm's comment notes on the origin Schweich (probably by Friedrich Wilhelm Carové ) and compares Reinhart Fuchs 363 , Nicolaus von Straßburg (German mystics by Franz Pfeiffer p. 293) , Hans Sachs (2.4, 177 Kempten) , a Latin short story from the 15th century. Century after Wilhelm Wackernagel in Hoffmanns monthly from and for Silesia 1829 p. 471–472, on the sack full of wisdom KHM 175 Der Mond and in Kölle No. 9.

In 1819 several animal tales were included in Grimms Märchen: KHM 27 Die Bremer Stadtmusikanten , KHM 70 Die Drei Glückskinder , KHM 72 The Wolf and Man , KHM 73 The Wolf and the Fox , KHM 74 The Fox and the Godmother . The fox and the cat corresponds to the late version of one of the most famous European fables of the Middle Ages. Even Archilochus mentions with fox and hedgehog. Preachers related them to Lk 14:11 and 18:14.
