The Hamburger und Germania Ruder Club (simply called the club by its members ) is a traditional rowing club from the Hamburg district of Eimsbüttel in the district of Rotherbaum on the west side of the Outer Alster . It is the second oldest non-academic rowing club in the world after the Leander Club .

history

The former club house

Founded in 1836 as Der Hamburger Ruder Club (DHRC) by the brothers Cesar and Adolf Godeffroy and nine other Hamburg merchants, it is not only the oldest rowing club in Germany , but also documents the birth of rowing in Germany in general. In 1934 he joined forces with the Germania Ruder Club (GRC), which was also founded by students in Hamburg in 1853 . In addition to numerous victories in national and international regattas, winning the Olympic gold medal at the first rowing competition in 1900 represents a high point in the club's early history. School rowing is particularly encouraged in the club . The Hamburg schools Johanneum and Wilhelm-Gymnasium are affiliated to the rowing club with their respective school clubs.

The new clubhouse

The club house, built in 1906, was demolished in 2015 because it was in disrepair. At the same location, a new building supported by donations was built, which was inaugurated in 2016.

At an extraordinary general meeting on September 3, 2015, a majority decided that women can now also join the club as members.
